Akita Prefectural Library opened in Akita, Akita Prefecture, Japan in 1899, and it is the one of the oldest libraries in the country. The facilities reopened in a new building in 1993. The collection numbers some 805,000 items in 2012.

Hakodate City Central Library is a public library in Hakodate, Hokkaidō, Japan. The library is known in particular for its important collection of northern materials and for its Takuboku Library (啄木文庫).

The Imperial Library of the Empire of Japan was established in 1872. Prior to World War II, it was the only national library in Japan. It is one of the predecessors of the current National Diet Library.

Kanazawa Umimirai Library is a public library located in Kanazawa city, Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan. This is a contemporary building by the Japanese architects Kazumi Kudo and Hiroshi Horiba, completed in 2011. Its surface creates a decorative grid made of some 6000 small circular blocks of glass which puncture the concrete surface of the building in a triangular array.

Kansai-kan of the National Diet Library is the facility of the National Diet Library, opened in October, 2002. It is based at the Kansai Science City in Seika Town, Soraku District, Kyoto Prefecture.

Kyoto Prefectural Library is a prefectural library located in Seishoji-cho 9, Okazaki, Sakyō-ku, Kyoto, Kyoto Prefecture. It was established in 1873, and is supported by the Kyoto prefectural government.

Okinawa Prefectural Library opened in Naha, Okinawa Prefecture, Japan in 1910. Iha Fuyū was the first director. The library reopened in a new building in 1983. As of 2016, the collection numbers some 708,000 items, of which almost a fifth are on open access.

Sendai Mediatheque is a library in Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture, Japan. It was designed by Toyo Ito in 1995 and completed in 2001.
