The 2005 Special Olympics Winter World Games were hosted at Nagano in Nippon and were the first Special Olympics World Games held in Asia. Nagano became the first city in the world to host the Olympics, Paralympics and Special Olympics World Games.
The 2005 World Rowing Championships were World Rowing Championships that were held from 29 August to 4 September 2005 at the Nagaragawa International Regatta Course in Kaizu, Gifu Prefecture, Japan. The international rowing season usually ends with the World Championship regatta. Apart from the Olympic Games, this is the most prestigious international rowing event attracting over 1000 rowers. The 2005 championships were the first championships to be held in Asia.

The 2007 IFAF World Championship was the third instance of the IFAF World Championship, the quadrennial international American football world championship tournament. It was held July 7–15, 2007 in Kawasaki, Kanagawa, Japan.

The 2015 IFMAR 1:10 scale Electric Off-Road World Championships is the 16th edition of the IFMAR 1:10 Electric Off-Road World Championship for 1:10 scale radio-controlled electric off-road buggies sanctioned by the International Federation of Model Auto Racing (IFMAR). It was run over two separate classes over eight days from 3 to 10 October, with each class running for three days each in total.

The 2019 IFSC Climbing World Championships, the 16th edition, were held in Hachioji, Japan from 11 to 21 August 2019. The championships consisted of lead, speed, bouldering, and combined events. The paraclimbing event was held separately from 16 to 17 July in Briançon, France. The combined event also served as an Olympic qualifying event for the 2020 Summer Olympics.

The 53rd World Rowing Junior Championships took place from 7 to 11 August 2019 at the Sea Forest Waterway, Odaiba in Tokyo, Japan.

The 2026 Asian Games, also known as XX Asiad and Aichi-Nagoya 2026, will be a multi-sport event celebrated in the Aichi Prefecture and its capital Nagoya in Japan from 19 September to 4 October 2026. Nagoya will be the third Japanese city to host the Games, after Tokyo in 1958 and Hiroshima in 1994.

The 1958 Asian Games, officially the Third Asian Games and commonly known as Tokyo 1958, was a multi-sport event held in Tokyo, Japan, from 24 May to 1 June 1958. It was governed by the Asian Games Federation. A total of 1,820 athletes representing 20 Asian National Olympic Committees (NOCs) participated in the Games. The program featured competitions in 13 different sports encompassing 97 events, including four non-Olympic sports, judo, table tennis, tennis and volleyball. Four of these competition sports – field hockey, table tennis, tennis and volleyball – were introduced for the first time in the Asian Games.

The FIS Alpine World Ski Championships 1993 were held 4–14 February in Japan at Shizukuishi ski area, northwest of Morioka, the capital of Iwate Prefecture. The men's Super-G race was cancelled due to persistent bad weather and the title went unassigned.

The 1st Asian Winter Games were held from March 1 to 8, 1986 in Sapporo, Hokkaidō, Japan. The Japanese Olympic Committee first suggested the idea of having a continent-wide winter version of the Asian Games in 1982. With Sapporo's expertise and infrastructure available after successfully hosting the 1972 Winter Olympics, the Olympic Council of Asia General Assembly in Seoul in 1984 decided to give Japan the privilege of hosting the first ever Asian Winter Games. Participating in a total of 35 events in seven sports were 430 athletes and officials from seven countries.
The 2nd Asian Winter Games were held from March 9 to 14, 1990, in Sapporo, Hokkaidō, Japan. India was originally scheduled to host the second edition of the games, but due to technical and financial difficulties it gave up its hosting rights to Japan in 1989. The 2nd Winter Asiad saw three NOCs participating in the games for the first time: Chinese Taipei, Iran and the Philippines.

The 1994 Asian Games, also known as the XII Asiad and the 12th Asian Games, were held from October 2 to 16, 1994, in Hiroshima, Japan. The main theme of this edition was to promote peace and harmony among Asian nations. It was emphasized by the host because the venue was the site of the first atomic bomb attack 49 years earlier. Due to the 1991 Gulf War, Iraq was suspended from the games. The games became memorable by the debuts of former republics of the Soviet Union: Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan.

The 2017 Asian Winter Games was the 8th edition of the Asian Winter Games. They were hosted in Sapporo and Obihiro in Hokkaido, Japan. These Games were originally scheduled for 2015, however, in the Olympic Council of Asia's general assembly in Singapore on 3 July 2009, the committee decided to move the Games to one year before the Winter Olympics moving forward. The games began on 19 February with the opening ceremony and ended with the closing ceremony on 26 February.

The 3rd East Asian Games were held in Osaka, Japan from May 19, 2001, to May 27, 2001.

The FIL World Luge Championships 2004 took place February 13-15, 2004 at the Spiral track in Nagano, Japan. This marked the first time the event took place in Asia.

The FIS Nordic World Ski Championships 2007 took place 22 February – 4 March 2007 in Sapporo, Japan. It was the second time this city has hosted these championships, having previously done so in the 1972 Winter Olympics. Sapporo was selected as venue by vote at the 43rd FIS World Congress in Portorož, Slovenia, on 6 June 2002. It also marked the third time the championships were hosted outside Europe in a year that did not coincide with the Winter Olympics; it was the first championship held in Asia. The ski jumping team normal hill event was not held, as it had been in 2005.

The 2021 Rhythmic Gymnastics World Championships were held from 27 to 31 October 2021 in Kitakyushu, Japan.

The 1970 World Karate Championships are the 1st edition of the World Karate Championships, and were held in Tokyo and Osaka, Japan on October 10 and October 13, 1970.

The 2008 World Karate Championships are the 19th edition of the World Karate Championships, and were held in Tokyo, Japan from November 13 to November 16, 2008.

The Golden Grand Prix Osaka is an international athletics competition in Osaka, Japan, held in May at the Yanmar Stadium Nagai, since 2018 under its current name. From 1996 to 2010 the event was known as the Osaka Grand Prix. Formerly part of the IAAF Grand Prix (2005–2009) and the IAAF World Challenge (2010), it was replaced in 2011 by the Golden Grand Prix Kawasaki, but the Golden Grand Prix returned to Osaka in 2018.

The 1964 Summer Paralympics , originally known as the 13th International Stoke Mandeville Games and also known as Paralympic Tokyo 1964, were the second Paralympic Games to be held. They were held in Tokyo, Japan, and were the last Summer Paralympics to take place in the same city as the Summer Olympics until the 1988 Summer Paralympics.

The 1998 Winter Paralympics , the seventh Winter Paralympics, were held alongside the Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan from 5 to 14 March 1998. They were the first Paralympic Winter Games to be held outside Europe. 571 athletes competed in Nagano; it still remains the highest number of athletes competing at any Winter Paralympics.

The 2017 Asian Airgun Championships were held at Wako City Gymnasium, Wako, Japan between 6 and 12 December 2017.

The 2020 Summer Paralympics , branded as the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games, were an international multi-sport parasports event held from 24 August to 5 September 2021 in Tokyo, Japan. They were the 16th Summer Paralympic Games as organized by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC).

Super J-Cup 2020 was the eighth Super J-Cup professional wrestling single-elimination tournament produced by New Japan Pro-Wrestling (NJPW). It was a one-night event, taking place on December 12, 2020. The tournament featured inter-promotional matches between junior heavyweight wrestlers from various wrestling promotions.
