Dubbed the "little lion of Puchong", He is the son of the former DAP leader Karpal Singh, who was known as the "Tiger of Jelutong". His brothers, Ramkarpal Singh and Jagdeep Singh Deo, are also DAP leaders. He created a history by becoming the first federal minister from the Sikh community.

He was also a member of the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO), a component party of the Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition, till he left the party with Mahathir in 2016 to found BERSATU. He is one of the two Menteris Besar of Malaysia who represented two different political parties and coalitions.
