Tanzania is divided into thirty-one regions or mikoa.

Arusha Region is one of Tanzania's 31 administrative regions. Its capital and largest city is the city of Arusha. The region is bordered by Kajiado County and Narok County in Kenya to the north, the Kilimanjaro Region to the east, the Manyara and Singida regions to the south, and the Mara and Simiyu regions to the west. Major towns include Monduli, Namanga, Longido, and Loliondo to the north, Mto wa Mbu and Karatu to the west, and Usa River to the east. The region is comparable in size to the combined land and water areas of the United States state of Maryland.

Dar es-Salaam is the largest city and former capital of Tanzania. It is the largest city in East Africa and the seventh-largest in Africa, with a projected population of 5,275,315 in 2019. On the Swahili coast, Dar es-Salaam is an important economic centre and one of the fastest growing cities in the world.

Dodoma Region is one of Tanzania's 31 administrative regions. The regional capital is the city of Dodoma. According to the 2012 national census, the region had a population of 2,083,588, which was lower than the pre-census projection of 2,214,657. For 2002-2012, the region's 2.1 percent average annual population growth rate was the twentieth highest in the country. It was also the seventeenth most densely populated region with 50 people per square kilometer. The main tribes of the region are the Gogo, the Warangi, and the Wasandawi; Dodoma means "sunk" in the Gogo language.

Geita Region is one of Tanzania's 31 administrative regions. The town of Geita is the capital. The regional commissioner of the Geita Region is Magalula Saidi Magalula.

Iringa is one of Tanzania's 31 administrative regions. The regional capital is Iringa. The region's population is 941,238. It is primarily agricultural and boasts the second-highest per-capita GDP in the country.

Kagera is one of Tanzania's 31 administrative regions. The region is located in the northwestern corner of Tanzania on the western shore of Lake Victoria. The region neighbours Uganda, Rwanda, and Burundi and lies across the lake from Kenya. The region was known as West Lake before June 1979. The regional capital is the city of Bukoba. According to the 2012 national census, the region had a population of 2,458,023, which was lower than the pre-census projection of 2,763,329. For 2002-2012, the region's 3.2 percent average annual population growth rate was tied for the third highest in the country. It was also the ninth-most densely populated region, with 97 people per square kilometre.

Katavi Region is one of Tanzania's 31 administrative regions with a postcode number 50000. The regional capital is Mpanda.

Kigoma Region is one of Tanzania's 31 administrative regions. The regional capital is the city of Kigoma. According to the 2012 national census, the region had a population of 2,127,930, which was higher than the pre-census projection of 1,971,332. For 2002-2012, the region's 2.4 percent average annual population growth rate was tied for the fourteenth highest in the country. It was also the sixteenth most densely populated region with 57 people per square kilometer. With a size of 45,066 square kilometres (17,400 sq mi), the region is slightly smaller than Estonia.

Kilimanjaro Region is one of Tanzania's 31 administrative regions with a postcode number 25000. The regional capital is the municipality of Moshi. According to the 2012 national census, the region had a population of 1,640,087, which was lower than the pre-census projection of 1,702,207. For 2002-2012, the region's 1.8 percent average annual population growth rate was the 24th highest in the country. It was also the eighth most densely populated region with 124 people per square kilometer.

Lindi Region is one of Tanzania's 31 administrative regions. The regional capital is the municipality of Lindi. According to the 2012 national census, the region had a population of 864,652, which was lower than the pre-census projection of 960,236. For 2002–2012, the region's 0.9 percent average annual population growth rate was the 29th highest in the country. It was also the least densely populated region with 13 people per square kilometer.

Manyara Region is one of Tanzania's 31 administrative regions. The regional capital is the town of Babati. According to the 2012 national census, the region had a population of 1,425,131, which was lower than the pre-census projection of 1,497,555. For 2002-2012, the region's 3.2 percent average annual population growth rate was tied for the third highest in the country. It was also the 22nd most densely populated region with 32 people per square kilometre.

Mara Region is one of Tanzania's 31 administrative regions. The regional capital is the municipality of Musoma. According to the 2012 national census, the region had a population of 1,743,830, which was lower than the pre-census projection of 1,963,460. For 2002–2012, the region's 2.5 percent average annual population growth rate was the thirteenth highest in the country. It was also the twelfth most densely populated region with 80 people per square kilometer.

Mbeya Region is one of Tanzania's 31 administrative regions. It is located in the country's southwest. The regional capital is the city of Mbeya. According to the 2012 national census, the region had a population of 2,707,410, which was lower than the pre-census projection of 2,822,396. For 2002-2012, the region's 2.7 percent average annual population growth rate was tied for the tenth highest in the country. It was also tied for the eighteenth most densely populated region with 45 people per square kilometre. In 2016, the town of Tunduma and the districts of Ileje, Mbozi, Momba and Songwe were split from Mbeya Region to create Songwe Region. Mbeya Region is now bordered to the northwest by Tabora Region, to the northeast by Singida Region, to the east by Iringa Region, to the south by Songwe Region and Malawi, and to the west by Songwe Region. Prior to the creation of Songwe Region, Mbeya Region covered an area of 62,420 square kilometres (24,100 sq mi). It now covers an area of 35,954 square kilometres (13,882 sq mi).

Mjini Magharibi Region is one of the 31 regions of Tanzania. Located on the island of Unguja, Zanzibar City serves as the region's capital. According to the 2012 Tanzania National Census, the population of the Zanzibar Urban/West Region was 593,678.

Morogoro Region is one of Tanzania's 31 administrative regions. The regional capital is the municipality of Morogoro. According to the 2012 national census, the region had a population of 2,218,492, which was higher than the pre-census projection of 2,209,072. For 2002–2012, the region's 2.4 percent average annual population growth rate was tied for the fourteenth highest in the country. It was also the 22nd most densely populated region with 31 people per square kilometer.

Mtwara Region is one of Tanzania's 31 administrative regions. The regional capital is the municipality of Mtwara. According to the 2012 national census, the region had a population of 1,270,854, which was lower than the pre-census projection of 1,374,767. For 2002-2012, the region's 1.2 percent average annual population growth rate was the 26th highest in the country. It was also the fourteenth most densely populated region with 76 people per square kilometer.

Njombe Region is one of the 31 administrative regions of Tanzania. It was established in March 2012, from the Iringa Region as an independent region. The region's capital is Njombe town. The newly established Njombe region is an upcoming tourism attractive area, ideal for domestic and international visits in the southern highlands of Tanzania.

Pemba North Region (Swahili: Kaskazini Pemba) is one of the 31 regions of Tanzania. Located on Pemba Island, the region's capital is Wete. The region includes islands adjacent to the northern part of Pemba, such as Njao Island and Fundu Island.

Pemba South Region (Swahili: Kusini Pemba) is one of the 31 regions of Tanzania. Located on Pemba Island, the region's capital is Mkoani.

Pwani Region is one of Tanzania's 31 administrative regions. The regional capital is the town of Kibaha. According to the 2012 national census, the region had a population of 1,098,668, which was slightly lower than the pre-census projection of 1,110,917. From 2002 to 2012, the region's 2.2 percent average annual population growth rate was the seventeenth-highest in the country. It was also the 21st most densely populated region with 34 people per square kilometre. With a size of 32,407 square kilometres (12,512 sq mi), the region is slightly larger than the U.S. state of Maryland.

Rukwa Region is one of Tanzania's 31 administrative regions with a postcode number 55000. The regional capital is the municipality of Sumbawanga. According to the 2012 national census, the region had a population of 1,004,539. For 2002–2012, the region's 3.2 percent average annual population growth rate was tied for the third highest in the country. It was also the twentieth most densely populated region with 44 people per square kilometer.

Ruvuma Region is one of Tanzania's 31 administrative regions. The regional capital is the municipality of Songea. According to the 2012 national census, the region had a population of 1,376,891, which was lower than the pre-census projection of 1,449,830. For 2002–2012, the region's 2.1 percent average annual population growth rate was the twentieth highest in the country. It was also the 28th most densely populated region with 22 people per square kilometer.

Shinyanga Region is one of Tanzania's 31 administrative regions. The regional capital is the municipality of Shinyanga. According to the 2012 national census, the region had a population of 1,534,808. For 2002-2012, the region's 2.1 percent average annual population growth rate was the twentieth highest in the country. It was also the tenth most densely populated region with 81 people per square kilometer. With a size of 50,781 square kilometres (19,607 sq mi), the region is slightly smaller than Costa Rica.

Simiyu Region is one of Tanzania's 31 administrative regions. The regional capital is the town of Bariadi. The region was created in March 2012, from part of Shinyanga Region.

Singida is one of the regions of Tanzania. The regional capital is the municipality of Singida. The region is bordered to the north by Shinyanga Region, Simiyu Region and Arusha Region, to the northeast by Manyara Region, to the east by Dodoma Region, to the southeast by Iringa Region, to the southwest by Mbeya Region and to the west by Tabora Region.

Songwe is a region of Tanzania created on 29 January 2016 from the western half of Mbeya Region. Its capital is Vwawa.

Tabora Region is one of Tanzania's 31 administrative regions. The regional capital is the municipality of Tabora. According to the 2012 national census, the region had a population of 2,291,623, which was lower than the pre-census projection of 2,539,715. For 2002–2012, the region's 2.9 percent average annual population growth rate was the ninth-highest in the country. It was also the 24th-most-densely-populated region with 30 people per square kilometre. The region's average household size of 6.0 persons was the third-highest in the country.

Tanga Region is one of the 31 administrative regions of Tanzania. It is bordered by Kenya and Kilimanjaro Region to the north; Manyara Region to the west; and Morogoro and Pwani regions to the south. Its eastern border is formed by the Indian Ocean. It has a population of about two million.

Unguja North Region is one of the 31 regions of Tanzania. Located on the island of Zanzibar, Mkokotoni serves as the region's capital. Zanzibar North is divided into two districts, Kaskazini A and Kaskazini B.

Unguja South Region is one of the 31 regions of Tanzania. Located on the island of Zanzibar, the town of Koani serves as the region's capital. As of 2002, the population was 94,504.
