Typhoon Damrey, known in the Philippines as Typhoon Labuyo, was a typhoon that hit Vietnam and China in September 2005. The typhoon was the most powerful storm to affect Hainan in over 30 years, killing more than 113 people.

The Hainan Island incident occurred on April 1, 2001, when a United States Navy EP-3E ARIES II signals intelligence aircraft and a People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) J-8II interceptor fighter jet collided in mid-air, resulting in an international dispute between the United States of America (USA) and the People's Republic of China (PRC).

The Hainan Island Operation, or Kainan-tō sakusen (海南島作戦) in Japanese, was part of a campaign by the Empire of Japan during the Second Sino-Japanese War to blockade the Republic of China and prevent it from communicating with the outside world as well as to prevent imports of much-needed arms and materials.

The Landing Operation on Hainan Island, also known as the Battle of Hainan Island (海南岛战役) or the Hainan Campaign (海南战役) for short, was a series of battles fought between the Kuomintang (Nationalists) and the People's Liberation Army (PLA) for the island of Hainan during the resumption of the Chinese Civil War in the post-World War II period, and resulted in a Communist victory.

Typhoon Marge, known in the Philippines as Typhoon Ibiang, was a typhoon that formed in September 1973. The Chinese town of Jiaji in Qionghai, Hainan recorded a minimum central pressure of 937.8 hPa when Marge made landfall. 903 people were killed in Hainan when Marge made its final landfall in Thanh Hóa, Vietnam, on September 15, 1973.

Nanyue, also called Southern Yue or Nam Việt, was an ancient Chinese kingdom that covered the modern Chinese subdivisions of Guangdong, Guangxi, Hainan, Hong Kong, and Macau, as well as parts of southern Fujian and northern Vietnam. Nanyue was established by Zhao Tuo, then Commander of Nanhai of Qin Empire, in 204 BC after the collapse of the Qin dynasty. At first, it consisted of the commanderies Nanhai, Guilin, and Xiang.
