WThe Chief of the General Staff is the chief of staff of the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. He/she is appointed by the President of Ukraine. If the Minister of Defense is a civilian the Chief of the General Staff becomes the commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The current Chief of the General Staff is Serhiy Korniychuk.
WYuriy Ivanovych Ilyin is a Ukrainian Admiral and former Commander of the Ukrainian Navy. He was elevated to the position of Chief of the General Staff by President Viktor Yanukovych on 19 February 2014 after the existing chief, Colonel General Volodymyr Zamana, was dismissed by the President during the February 2014 Euromaidan riots.

Poroshenko thanked Kutsyn and stated he became shell-shocked on 2 July 2014 while combating the 2014 insurgency in Donbass. He had a concussion and was staying at a hospital.

WVolodymyr Zamana is a Ukrainian colonel general, Chief of the General Staff in 2012-2014. On 19 February 2014, at the height of the February 2014 Euromaidan riots, president Viktor Yanukovych dismissed Zamana from his position as Chief of the General Staff, replacing him with pro-russian Admiral Yuriy Ilyin. After Yanukovych fled the country for Russia, Zamana was installed as a parliamentary commissioner in control of defence minister by the Parliament of Ukraine on 22 February 2014.
