
The Minister of Defence is the Government of Vietnam member in charge of the Ministry of Defence. The Minister of Defence directs the management functions of state for defense; responsible organization, construction, management and the highest commander of the Vietnam People's Army and Militia. Moreover, the Minister of Defence is the Vice Chairman of the Central Military Commission, a Member of the Politburo and Member of Council for National Defense and Security. The current Vietnamese Minister of Defence is 4 star Army General Ngô Xuân Lịch, since 9 April 2016.

Võ Nguyên Giáp was an army general in the Vietnam People's Army and a politician. Võ Nguyên Giáp has been called one of the greatest military strategists of the 20th century. He first rose to prominence during World War II, where he served as the military leader of the Viet Minh resistance against the Japanese occupation of Vietnam and also as Defence Minister & Deputy Prime Minister for nearly 44 years. Giáp was a crucial military commander in two wars: the First Indochina War of 1946–1954, and the Vietnam War of 1955–1975, participating in several historically significant battles: Cao Bằng in 1950, Hòa Bình in 1951–1952, Điện Biên Phủ in 1954, the Tết Offensive in 1968, the Easter Offensive in 1972, and the final Ho Chi Minh Campaign of 1975.

Lê Đức Anh was a Vietnamese politician and general who served as the fourth President of Vietnam from 1992 to 1997. He previously led the Vietnamese forces in Cambodia throughout the 1980s. He was regarded as a conservative who advocated maintaining tight party control over domestic policies.

Ngô Xuân Lịch is a Vietnamese politician and Vietnam's Minister of National Defence and Chief of the General Department of Politics of Vietnam. Ngô Xuân Lịch became a member of the Communist Party of Vietnam on 8 August 1974.

Văn Tiến Dũng, born Co Nhue commune, Từ Liêm District, Hanoi, was a Vietnamese general in the People's Army of Vietnam (PAVN), PAVN chief of staff (1954–74); PAVN commander in chief (1974–80); member of the Central Military–Party Committee (CMPC) (1984-1986) and Socialist Republic of Vietnam defense minister (1980–86).
