
The 2010 Kalgoorlie-Boulder earthquake was a 5.2 Mw earthquake that occurred near the city of Kalgoorlie-Boulder, Western Australia on 20 April 2010, at approximately 8:17 am WST.

The 2013 Western Australian state election was held on Saturday 9 March 2013 to elect 59 members to the Legislative Assembly and 36 members to the Legislative Council. The Liberal Party won a majority of seats in the Legislative Assembly for the first time since the election of 1996, retaining government with 31 seats. The Labor Party won 21 seats and the National Party won 7 seats. In the Legislative Council, the Liberals won 17 of the 36 seats.

Julieka Ivanna Dhu was a 22-year-old Australian Aboriginal woman who died in police custody in South Hedland, Western Australia, in 2014. On 2 August that year, police responded to a report that Dhu's partner had violated an apprehended violence order. Upon arriving at their address, the officers arrested both Dhu and her partner after realising there was also an outstanding arrest warrant for unpaid fines against Dhu. She was detained in police custody in South Hedland and was ordered to serve four days in custody in default of her debt.
