Founded by school friends Jon Hare and Chris Yates in Chelmsford, Essex, UK in 1986, games such as Sensible World of Soccer, Cannon Fodder, Mega-Lo-Mania, Wizball, Shoot-'Em-Up Construction Kit, MicroProse Soccer and Wizkid: The Story of Wizball II gave Sensible a total of 8 #1 hits in the UK all format charts, including 52 weeks in the top spot between June 1992 and June 1995. Their games were extremely popular across Europe selling millions of copies and winning many awards, however their success outside of Europe was much more limited, mostly due to the platforms they tended to lead development on.

The company, founded in 1983 in Boulder, Colorado by Jeff Sauter, Phil Adam and Mike Franklin, was best known for its simulation games, notably the Falcon series of combat flight simulators, and for publishing the first version of Tetris outside the Soviet Union. Spectrum HoloByte published games for various home computers and video game consoles.
