Yakuza, known in Japan as Ryū ga Gotoku , is a Japanese video game franchise created, owned and published by Sega. The series genre is primarily beat 'em up, but elements of the action-adventure, open world, and action role-playing genres are also incorporated. The series originated from creator Toshihiro Nagoshi's desire to design a game that would tell the way of life of the yakuza. Nagoshi initially struggled to find a platform for the project, until Sony showed interest in the prospect.

It was released in Japan on March 8, 2018 and worldwide on October 2, 2018.

Goro Majima is a major recurring character in Sega's Yakuza video game series and one of the main playable protagonists of Yakuza 0 and Yakuza: Dead Souls, as well as the Majima Saga of Yakuza Kiwami 2. Introduced as a member of the Tojo clan, Majima takes an interest in the lifestyle of the protagonist Kazuma Kiryu. He is seeking continually to fight him, seeing him as a rival but bonds with him across the franchise. Majima's character is explored in more detail during the prequel Yakuza 0, in which he is a 24-year-old former Yakuza and a playable protagonist along with Kiryu. In this game, Majima has a calmer demeanor that develops during a war between a number of families in a fight for a patch of land known as the Empty Lot. Majima also appears in the spin-off Dead Souls as well as the crossover Project X Zone 2. He is voiced by Hidenari Ugaki in Japanese, while Mark Hamill voices him in the English dub for the first entry and Matthew Mercer voices him in the English dub of Yakuza: Like a Dragon.

Haruka Sawamura is a fictional character from Sega's action-adventure game series Yakuza. Introduced in the first Yakuza game, Haruka is a young child who is looking for her missing mother. The character Kazuma Kiryu adopts her to protect her from multiple clans from the Tojo clan who are seeking her. Across the series, Haruka grows up alongside her adoptive father, debuting as a playable character in Yakuza 5 working as an idol and starting her own family in Yakuza 6. Haruka is voiced by Rie Kugimiya in Japanese, and by Debi Derryberry in the English version of the first game.

Judgment is an action-adventure video game developed by Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio and published by Sega. A spin off to the Yakuza series, initial development of the game began in 2015 under the codename Project Judge. Sega released it for the PlayStation 4 on December 13, 2018, in Japan, and on June 25, 2019, worldwide. A remastered version of the game, under the subtitle Remastered in Japan and Asia, is set to release for the PlayStation 5, Stadia and Xbox Series X/S on April 23, 2021. The game follows lawyer-turned-detective Takayuki Yagami as he and his allies explore a case involving corpses whose eyes have been removed. The player controls Yagami in the fictional Tokyo district of Kamurocho, where he fights thugs and yakuza while carrying out side missions which involve chasing, stealth and searching for clues.

Kazuma Kiryu is a fictional character and the main protagonist in Sega's action-adventure Japanese role-playing game series Yakuza. He was introduced in the 2005 game with the same name as fearsome yakuza nicknamed "the Dragon of Dojima" . Kiryu takes the blame for his boss' death to protect his best friend Akira Nishikiyama, resulting in his expulsion from the clan and a ten-year stay in prison. After leaving prison, Kiryu learns the crime world has changed and fights against the new threats in his life. He is voiced by Takaya Kuroda in Japanese and by Darryl Kurylo in the English version of the first game which he reprises 15 years later for Yakuza: Like a Dragon. Besides the two Yakuza live-action films, the character has also appeared in other video games including Project X Zone 2 and as downloadable content in Fist of the North Star: Lost Paradise.

Ryuji Goda , is a fictional character from Sega's action-adventure game Yakuza series, first appearing in 2006's Yakuza 2, and also appearing in its 2017 remake, Yakuza Kiwami 2. Goda also appears as one of the main characters in the sixth installment of the series, Yakuza: Dead Souls, which does not follow the series' canon and is set in an alternate timeline where Goda survives his wounds at the end of Yakuza 2. Goda is most recently featured as the protagonist of a prequel story arc in Ryu ga Gotoku ONLINE, a freemium collectible card game spin-off exclusive to Japan.

The story follows Kazuma Kiryu, a yakuza member who spent ten years in prison for a crime he did not commit. After being released, he learns that the criminal underworld is searching for 10 billion yen that has been stolen from the Tojo clan. He comes across an orphan named Haruka who is being targeted by the clan. She is believed to have the key to their lost money and Kiryu resolves to protect her. The game takes place in Kamurocho, a realistic recreation of Tokyo's Kabukicho district.

Yakuza 0 is an action-adventure video game developed and published by Sega. It is the sixth main entry in the Yakuza series and a prequel to the original game. It was released for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 in Japan in March 2015, and in North America and Europe for PlayStation 4 in January 2017. It was released on Microsoft Windows on 1 August 2018 and was released on Xbox One on 26 February 2020. Yakuza 2 is an action-adventure game by Sega, the sequel to Yakuza. It was released on December 7, 2006, for the PlayStation 2 in Japan and in September 2008 in North America and Europe. The game focuses on the former yakuza Kazuma Kiryu who receives a request for help from his former group, the Tojo Clan, to keep relationships with the western group, the Omi Alliance, stable. Across Kiryu's journey he learns of a Korean mafia group linked with the Omi Alliance, and becomes the rival of the Omi's "Dragon of Kansai", Ryuji Goda.

Yakuza 3 is the third main entry in the Yakuza series, released for the PlayStation 3 in 2009. It is developed by Sega's CS1 Team and published by Sega. It was released in Japan and South East Asia on February 26, 2009 and in North America and Europe on March 9, 2010 and March 12, 2010, respectively. A remaster containing all cut content was released in Japan on August 9, 2018 and worldwide on August 20, 2019 for the PlayStation 4, and on January 28, 2021 for Microsoft Windows and Xbox One. A sequel, Yakuza 4, was released on March 18, 2010 in Japan.

Yakuza 4 was released in Europe and North America in March 2011.

Yakuza: Dead Souls is an action-adventure survival horror video game, developed and published by Sega for the PlayStation 3. The game is the sixth installment in the Yakuza series. The game was originally scheduled for release in Japan on March 17, 2011 two days after the release of Yakuza 4 in North America; however, after the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami, the release was indefinitely delayed. A new release date, setting the game's release for June 9, was announced on April 7. The game was also released in North America and Europe by Sega in March 2012.

It is the eighth main release in the Yakuza series, and was released in Japan and Asia for PlayStation 4 on January 16, 2020. It had a worldwide release on November 10, 2020 for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S; the latter being released with the game as a launch title. A version with the subtitle International is set to release in Japan and Asia on February 25, 2021 for the Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and Windows 10, and on March 2, 2021 for the PlayStation 5; the latter being set for release worldwide on the same date.
