
A lake island is any landmass within a lake. It is a type of inland island. Lake islands may form a lake archipelago.

The Lakes, Parks and Leisure Administration in Bucharest (Romanian: Administraţia Lacuri, Parcuri şi Agrement) has under its upkeep nine lakes and nine dams, from the total of 15 located on the Colentina River, that started to be built since 1936 and that cover a total area of 1,153.98 ha (11.5398 km2) and have a combined volume of 29,571,000 m3 (1.0443×109 cu ft). The largest lake inside Bucharest, in terms of surface area, is the Lake Morii, other large lakes with banks in Bucharest or parts in Bucharest are the Lake Cernica that has an area of 341 ha (3.41 km2); and the largest in terms of volume is Lake Pantelimon with a volume of 12,300,000 m3 (430,000,000 cu ft). The oldest manmade lake in Bucharest is the Herăstrău Lake, which was completed in 1936; this lake also has the oldest sluice in the city, built between 1933 and 1936, and finalized in 2007.

A number of lakes throughout the world are drying or completely dry due to irrigation or urban use diverting inflow.

The most important lakes in the Faroe Islands are Leitisvatn on Vágar, Fjallavatn also on Vágar, Sandsvatn on Sandoy, Lake Eiði on Eysturoy and Lake Toftir on Eysturoy. There are many other smaller lakes across the whole country, most of them used for leisure fishing. Some of the lakes are also used for electricity production, and especially Lake Eiði near Eiði and the water systems around Vestmanna are important in this context. Also in Strond on Borðoy and at Botnur in Suðuroy there are important power-plants.
