Ossabaw Island is one of the Sea Islands located on the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of the U.S. state of Georgia approximately twenty miles by water south from the historic downtown of the city of Savannah. One of the largest of Georgia's barrier islands, Ossabaw contains 9,000 acres (3,600 ha) of wooded uplands with freshwater ponds and 16,000 acres (6,500 ha) of marshlands interlaced with tidal creeks. Located between Wassaw Island and the Ogeechee River on the north and St. Catherines Island on the south, the island is not linked to the mainland by bridge or causeway. At 26,000 acres (11,000 ha), it is the third-largest barrier island off the coast of Georgia.

It is the site of Hog Hammock, the last known Gullah community. It is illegal to visit the island without a permit issued by state tourism authorities.

The Anschutz family of Denver, Colorado owns two resorts with limited public access and maintains a gated community for around 500 single-family residences.

Skidaway Island is home to the Skidaway Institute of Oceanography, a research institution operated by the University of Georgia and used by UGA scholars and researchers as well as those from the Georgia Institute of Technology, Savannah State University, the College of Coastal Georgia, and other universities.

St. Catherines Island is one of the Golden Isles on the coast of the U.S. state of Georgia, 42 miles (80 km) south of Savannah in Liberty County. The island is ten miles (16 km) long and from one to three miles (5 km) wide, located between St. Catherine's Sound and Sapelo Sound. The island is approximately 22,265 acres. About half of the island is salt marsh. Half of the remaining acreage is wooded, and there are fine beaches on the northeast and south sides. It is owned by the Saint Catherines Island Foundation and is not open to the public, aside from the beach below the mean high water line.

The land mass is 76 percent salt marshes and 24 percent beaches, dunes, and maritime forest. The refuge is a part of the Savannah Coastal Refuges Complex.
